Yes, the title of today’s post can sound quite morbid, but they are one of my favorite bands. Amberly and I try and see them every time they come to Birmingham. We use to drive to Atlanta on a regular basis to see them. Granted we were younger, and gas wasn’t so dang expensive. When we heard they were coming to Birmingham we figured we should see them one last time before the baby comes. An additional plus, the venue for this show was the smoke free Bottletree. I will post some pictures from the other night at the end of the post.
Murder by Death is a lovely collection of guitar, bass, drums, piano, and cello blending indie, Americana, blues, country, and rock. Some of their more recent work draws from later Johnny Cash. Most, if not all, of their albums can be considered concept albums. A concept album is one that follows a common thread, and more often than not tells a story. I think everybody should check them out. I know they won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but they can not be easily pigeonholed. They need to be heard to be appreciated. If you can catch them live even better.
Here is my preferred method of music consumption when it comes to Murder by Death.
- Live! A definite must.
- On vinyl. Yes, I said vinyl. They release every single thing on vinyl. Break out your record player and dust it off. It has to be heard to be understood.
- CD/MP3. You know, for convenience.
I could go on, but that just gets real dorky. Enjoy some photos.
